GREAT IS THE ENEMY OF GOOD

Here She Was

Dirtsmith, May 30, 2026May 30, 2026

Well. Looks like I kinda fell off the edge of the world again. This happens periodically.

Amazingly, this site is still getting regular visitors! All because of a random post subjecting The Killers’ All These Things That I’ve Done to internal verbatim analysis.

(Which produced a vague interpretation of the song that is at odds with the author’s stated meaning – i.e. that it is about Iraq war vets).

Nevertheless, that article has driven steadily increasing traffic to this site – despite my failure to post anything in more than two years.

So, thank you to all the Killers fans out there!

A lot can happen in two years. In that time both I and my partner have had our relationships with our children grievously damaged by the other parents’ coercive control.

I haven’t seen my daughter in more than two years.

My partner’s son is held captive in a corrupt foreign jurisdiction (Portugal), under the total control of his father.

There is so much more to say about the phenomenon of Parental Alienation. But for now, here is a song I wrote for my daughter.

You can also find it on other streaming platforms. Or listen to it on YouTube –

The Zero Sum Experience

Here is an interesting, but seemingly obvious observation I stumbled across – marginalrevolution.com/marginalrevolution/2023/09/the-zero-sum-idea-trap.html It’s a short read so worth taking a look. Here’s the gist though. According to the cited article from Financial Times, typically people who grow up with wealth and upward mobility conceive of a world where everything…

The Essayist with a Plectrum

February 14, 2024February 14, 2024

The Essayist with a Plectrum When it comes to writing songs, the lyrics that have always held me back. They really don’t come easily for me. I’ve know a lot of musicians who can just start making stuff up to sing while they are playing guitar. I am not one…

Iphigenia in Aulis

March 4, 2024March 4, 2024

Iphigenia If You Imagine Yourself Unblemished By Failure… …I invite you to try your hand at parenting. I’ve been going through a really challenging and bewildering episode with my daughter and her mother. Too challenging to try to explain, and too bewildering (and entirely too vague) for me to comprehend….
