GREAT IS THE ENEMY OF GOOD

A Silly Birthday Song for Bram

Dirtsmith, October 17, 2023October 23, 2023

Sometimes I get commissioned to write a silly song for someone. It happens most often for birthdays. Sometimes it’s for someone I care about. But sometimes it’s for someone that someone I care about cares about (but I don’t really know). All are bonkers. On one occasion I have produced a personal masterpiece (sorry, not this one!)

To write a song for someone that someone I care about cares about (but I don’t really know), I require a list of interests and attributes for that person. In this instance the list included:

Greece | 50th Birthday | Magic | Wizard | Madonna | Student | Jewish | Awkward Teenager | 80’s

The challenging component was that I didn’t receive the list until 1:00 AM while I was sleeping, and when I awoke I had to work fast to get the song to Greece (which is ten hours ahead) before the end of birthday festivities. This is what I managed to scramble together this morning.

The Daily Stone

Provenanance – Found amongst personal effects. It caught my eye while I hunted for some string I had made by hand from yucca leaf which I needed to create my “Olive Wreath.” (Unfortunately I don’t have any olive trees 🙁 I had to resort to Sticky Monkey Flower).

I am going to an open mic tonight at a wonderful coffee house in a charming nearby town, and it will probably run late with a community jam session afterwards. I have been attending and playing there for the past two weeks. It has been an amazing, life-giving experience of…
